If you’re searching for an emergency dentist in Calgary, this guide explains what to do in the first 30 minutes, what counts as a real emergency, and when to head to the hospital instead.

Need help right now? Call The Port Dental at 403-345-1110. The tooth has the greatest chance of being saved if it is put back or seen by a dentist within about 30 to 60 minutes.

Pick up the tooth by the crown only (the white part). Never touch the root

Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty (do NOT scrub or use soap)

Adult (permanent) teeth only: try to gently put it back in the socket, the right way around, then bite down on a clean cloth to hold it

If you can’t put it back: keep it in cold milk, saline, or the person’s own saliva in a clean cup. Use water only if nothing else is available, and never let it dry out

Call the clinic at 403-345-1110 immediately and head over. If we are closed, go to the nearest emergency department

Severe Toothache with Swelling

Swelling can be a sign of infection, and infection can spread. Apply a cold compress, wrapped in a cloth, to the outside of the cheek and call us at 403-345-1110. If you need pain relief, use over-the-counter pain relief only as directed on the package. Ask a pharmacist, doctor or dentist which option is safe for you, especially for children, pregnancy, other medicines or health conditions. Do not apply heat. Do not place aspirin on the gum or tooth (a common myth; it can burn the gum). If you also have a fever, or the swelling is spreading, follow the urgent steps under Severe Abscess below.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

Rinse with warm salt water. Save any pieces in a clean container with a little milk or water and bring them with you. Use orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum to cover any sharp edge that’s cutting your tongue. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us within 24 hours, or sooner if there’s pain. If the tooth broke from a hard blow to the face or head, go to an emergency department first to be checked for other injuries.

Lost Crown or Filling

Clean the area gently. If you have the crown, keep it in a clean container and bring it with you. Do not glue it back with household glue, and call us before trying to put it back yourself, since a loose crown can be swallowed or breathed in. Avoid chewing on that tooth. For pain relief, follow the package directions and ask a pharmacist which option is safe for you. Book a same-day or next-day appointment.

Severe Abscess

Call 911 if you have trouble breathing or swallowing. If you have facial swelling with a fever, go to the nearest emergency department or call Health Link 811 (24/7 advice from a registered nurse). Peter Lougheed Centre in NE Calgary is the closest hospital emergency department to our clinic. An infection that spreads toward the airway is a medical emergency. For a painful abscess without these signs, call us at 403-345-1110 for a same-day visit when possible.

When to Go to ER Instead of a Dentist

Go to a hospital emergency department, not a dental clinic, if you have:

Difficulty breathing or swallowing (call 911)

Swelling that’s closing your eye or extending down the neck

Fever with facial swelling, or a high fever with dental pain

Uncontrolled bleeding after 30+ minutes of pressure

Jaw trauma with potential fracture

Hospital emergency departments near our NE clinic include Peter Lougheed Centre (NE Calgary) and Foothills Medical Centre. If you are not sure where to go, call Health Link 811.

After-Hours Emergency Dental Care in NE Calgary

The Port Dental is located in Saddle Ridge and serves Taradale, Martindale, Falconridge, Castleridge, and surrounding NE communities. We offer same-day emergency appointments when possible during clinic hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm. Outside these hours, call Health Link 811 for advice, or go to an emergency department for the urgent signs above. For more on emergency dental procedures, see our earlier guide on Calgary emergency dental situations.

Common Questions About Emergency Dental Care in Calgary

How much does an emergency dental visit cost in Calgary?

It depends on what you need. The visit usually starts with an emergency exam and an x-ray, then any treatment is quoted before we begin. Our root canal cost guide lists the 2026 Alberta suggested fees for common emergency treatments, and we direct bill most insurance plans and CDCP.

Will insurance cover emergency dental?

Many dental plans cover emergency exams and some treatment, but coverage varies by plan. We direct bill most insurance plans, so you usually pay only the part your plan does not cover.

Can I get a same-day appointment without being an existing patient?

Often, yes. We offer same-day emergency appointments when possible, and new patients are welcome. Call as early in the day as you can.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

Most of the same first steps apply, with one key difference: do NOT put a knocked-out baby tooth back in, because it can harm the adult tooth growing underneath. Bring your child in to be checked. Ask a pharmacist or doctor which pain relief is safe for your child. If your child also hit their head, go to an emergency department or call Health Link 811.

Is a knocked-out adult tooth always savable?

Not always. The chances are much better if you act within 30 minutes and keep the tooth in milk, saline or saliva. They drop the longer the tooth stays dry, and are much lower after about an hour out of the mouth without one of these.

Call Us Now: Emergency Dentist in NE Calgary

If you’re reading this in pain, don’t wait.
