Gentle, Fun Dental Care for Kids

We understand that a child's early dental experiences shape their attitude toward oral health for life. That's why we take extra care to make every visit positive, comfortable, and even enjoyable.

Our team is experienced in working with children of all ages — from toddlers experiencing their first dental visit to teenagers needing orthodontic evaluations. We use age-appropriate language, a gentle touch, and plenty of patience to help your child feel safe and comfortable.

Parents are always welcome to accompany their children into the treatment room. We encourage you to be part of the experience and help your child feel at ease.

Children's Dental Services at The Port Dental

First Dental Visit

We recommend a first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth. This gentle introduction helps kids get comfortable in the dental chair.

Dental Exams & Cleanings

Regular checkups and professional cleanings tailored for children's developing teeth, monitoring growth and catching issues early.

Fluoride Treatments

Topical fluoride application to help strengthen enamel and protect against cavities during the cavity-prone childhood years.

Dental Sealants

A thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars) to help prevent cavities in the hard-to-brush grooves.

Children's Fillings

Gentle cavity treatment using tooth-coloured fillings. We take extra care to keep children comfortable throughout the process.

Orthodontic Assessment

Early monitoring of tooth alignment and jaw development. We'll let you know if and when orthodontic treatment may be needed.

When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth erupting — whichever comes first.

This early visit isn't about treatment — it's about getting your child used to the dental environment, checking for early signs of decay, and giving you guidance on proper brushing techniques, diet, and oral habits (like thumb-sucking and pacifier use).

After the first visit, we recommend checkups every 6 months to monitor their developing teeth and address any concerns early.

Kids Dentistry Questions

The recommended age for a child's first dental visit is by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. This early visit helps your child become familiar with the dental office and allows us to monitor their dental development from the start.
Our team is trained to work with children of all temperaments. We use a gentle, encouraging approach — explaining things in simple terms, going slowly, and using positive reinforcement. We never force a child into treatment. If needed, we can discuss sedation options for particularly anxious kids.
Modern digital dental X-rays use very low radiation doses, and we only take them when clinically indicated. We use protective measures appropriate for children and always weigh the diagnostic benefit before recommending any imaging — and we're happy to discuss any concerns you have.
Keep it simple and positive. Read children's books about going to the dentist, practice opening their mouth wide, and avoid using words like "hurt" or "pain." Let them know the dentist is a friendly helper who takes care of teeth. Most importantly, stay calm — children pick up on parental anxiety.
