What to eat after wisdom teeth removal depends on how many days have passed. For the first 24 hours, stick to cool, smooth foods that need no chewing, such as yogurt, applesauce, pudding and lukewarm blended soup. On days 2 and 3, add soft foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, oatmeal and mild dal. From days 4 to 7, move to soft-chew foods such as pasta and flaky fish. After the first week, most people return to their usual meals. Skip straws, hot drinks, spicy food and anything crunchy while you heal.
Your dentist’s written instructions come first, since healing depends on how many teeth came out and how deep they were. Some impacted teeth (teeth trapped under the gum or bone) are removed by an oral surgeon, who will give you their own aftercare plan. Many of the tips below follow the Canadian Dental Association advice on care after oral surgery. If you have wisdom teeth removal in Calgary NE coming up, stock your kitchen before the appointment.
What to eat after wisdom teeth removal, day by day
Move to the next stage only when eating feels comfortable. The socket (the hole left where the tooth was) fills with a blood clot that needs a few quiet days to settle and start healing.
| When | What to eat | What to drink | Tips |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | Yogurt, applesauce, pudding, mashed banana, smooth soup cooled to lukewarm | Water, milk, milkshakes or seedless smoothies, sipped from a glass | Wait until the numbness wears off before eating. Do not rinse your mouth. |
| Days 2 to 3 | Scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, cottage cheese, hummus, mild dal, khichdi or congee | Water, milk, and lukewarm tea, coffee or chai | Start gentle warm salt water rinses. Chew on the side away from the surgery. |
| Days 4 to 7 | Soft pasta, flaky fish, soft rice, well-cooked vegetables, pancakes, soft roti dipped in mild curry | Most drinks at a comfortable temperature. No alcohol yet. | Add texture slowly. Rinse gently after meals to clear food from the sockets. |
| After week 1 | Your usual foods as comfort allows. Add crunchy, hard and spicy foods last. | Normal drinks. Wait 2 full weeks before alcohol. | Keep chewing away from the sockets until they feel healed. |
Soft foods to eat after wisdom teeth removal
Variety helps you stay fed and hydrated while chewing is limited. These soft foods suit most families and can be made ahead.
- Protein: scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, blended lentil soup and, from day 4, flaky fish.
- Fruit and vegetables: applesauce, mashed banana, avocado, mashed sweet potato or squash, and smoothies made with seedless fruit.
- Grains: oatmeal, cream of wheat, soft pasta, congee or arroz caldo.
- Family favourites: mild dal, khichdi and soft upma, served lukewarm and without chili.
- Treats: plain ice cream, pudding or custard, eaten with a spoon.
Foods and habits to avoid after wisdom teeth removal
A blood clot forms in each socket and protects the healing area. Most of these rules exist to keep that clot in place.
- Straws: the suction can pull the clot loose. Skip straws for at least the first few days, or as long as your dentist advises (MyHealth Alberta).
- Smoking and alcohol: the CDA advises avoiding tobacco and alcohol for the first 2 weeks. They make it harder for blood to clot and easier for infection to start. Vaping also creates suction, so hold off on that too.
- Crunchy and hard foods: chips, nuts, popcorn, seeds and crusty bread can poke the wound or lodge in the socket.
- Chewy and sticky foods: gum, toffee and tough meat strain the jaw and can disturb the healing site.
- Spicy foods: chili, hot sauce and spicy curries can sting the open wound. Save them for after the first week.
- Very hot food and drinks: heat increases blood flow, and the wound can start to bleed again. Let soup, tea and chai cool first.
- Rinsing hard: swishing and spitting forcefully can loosen the clot. Skip rinsing for the first 24 hours, then rinse gently.
What is dry socket and what are the signs?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in a socket breaks down or comes loose before the area has healed (MyHealth Alberta). It usually shows up a few days after surgery. Watch for these signs:
- Severe pain that starts or gets worse a few days after surgery, instead of easing
- Pain that spreads toward the ear on the same side
- A bad taste or bad smell coming from the socket
- A socket that looks empty when you check it in the mirror
Dry socket is treatable. A dentist or oral surgeon may place a medicated dressing in the socket to ease the pain (MyHealth Alberta), so call as soon as you notice these signs.
How to eat comfortably while you heal
- Prepare soft meals before your appointment, such as soup, dal and mashed potatoes, so you are not cooking on day one.
- Take small bites and chew with the teeth farthest from the surgery.
- Eat thicker smoothies with a spoon.
- Sip water through the day to stay hydrated.
- After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water 4 or 5 times a day for 3 or 4 days, as the CDA suggests. Use 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water.
- Keep brushing your other teeth as usual, staying away from the wound.

When to call a dentist after wisdom teeth removal
Some soreness, swelling and oozing is normal. The CDA notes that swelling may last 5 to 7 days and bruising can last up to 10 days. Call your dentist if any of these happen:
- You are still bleeding a lot 4 hours or more after surgery
- You have a fever, feel like throwing up, or are vomiting
- Pain is not getting better after a full day, or pain medicine is not helping
- Swelling is still getting worse 2 days or more after surgery, or has not gone down within 7 days
- You notice any of the dry socket signs above
If you cannot reach your own dentist, The Port Dental Clinic offers same-day emergency dental appointments when possible. We are open 7 days a week in Calgary NE, except statutory holidays. Our dentists speak English, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali and Gujarati.
When the clinic is closed, call Health Link 811 for 24/7 advice from a registered nurse (Primary Care Alberta). Go to the nearest emergency department for facial swelling with fever, or for heavy bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure when you cannot reach a dentist. Call 911 if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow.
Frequently asked questions
Most people move to soft-chew foods around days 4 to 7 and back to their usual diet after the first week. Healing times vary, so follow your dentist’s advice and add harder foods slowly.
Avoid hot drinks on the first day, because heat can restart bleeding. After that, let tea, coffee or chai cool to lukewarm and drink it from a cup without a straw.
Very soft rice dishes such as congee or khichdi are usually fine from days 2 to 3. Loose grains of plain rice can lodge in the socket, so wait until days 4 to 7 and rinse gently after eating.
Yes. Plain, soft ice cream is a good choice in the first few days. Eat it with a spoon and skip cones and toppings such as nuts, cookie pieces or candy.
Severe pain a few days after surgery that gets worse, pain spreading toward the ear, or a bad taste or smell from the socket can point to dry socket. Call your dentist, who may place a medicated dressing in the socket to ease the pain.
