Emergency Dentist Calgary: What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

Emergency Dentist Calgary: What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

Dental emergencies happen at the worst moments — Sunday evenings, holiday weekends, the night before a flight. If you’re searching for an emergency dentist in Calgary right now, this guide tells you exactly what to do in the first 30 minutes, what counts as a real emergency, and when to head to the hospital instead.

Need help right now? Call The Port Dental at (403) 293-1118. We reserve same-day emergency appointments for NE Calgary patients.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Real dental emergencies that need same-day care include:

  • Knocked-out (avulsed) permanent tooth
  • Severe, throbbing toothache with swelling
  • Visible abscess or pus near a tooth
  • Cracked or fractured tooth with pain
  • Bleeding that won’t stop after 15 minutes of pressure
  • Lost crown or filling with exposed nerve pain
  • Trauma to the jaw with difficulty opening or closing

Issues that can usually wait until the next business day: a chip with no pain, a loose crown without sensitivity, mild gum irritation, mild sensitivity to cold.

The First 30 Minutes — What to Do Right Now

Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed)

The single most time-sensitive dental emergency. You have about 30–60 minutes to save the tooth.

  1. Pick up the tooth by the crown only (the white part) — never the root
  2. Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty (do NOT scrub or use soap)
  3. Try to put it back in the socket if possible — bite down on a clean cloth to hold it
  4. If you can’t reinsert: store in cold milk, saline, or saliva (not water)
  5. Call the clinic immediately and head over

Severe Toothache with Swelling

Swelling means infection — and infection can spread fast. Take ibuprofen (400–600 mg) for pain, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek, and call us. Do not apply heat. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum (a common myth — it causes chemical burns).

Cracked or Broken Tooth

Rinse with warm salt water. Save any fragments in milk. Use orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum to cover any sharp edge that’s cutting your tongue. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us within 24 hours — sooner if there’s pain.

Lost Crown or Filling

Clean the area gently. If you have the crown, you can temporarily reattach it with denture adhesive or sugar-free gum. Avoid chewing on that tooth. Pain medication if needed. Book a same-day or next-day appointment.

Severe Abscess

If you have facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing/breathing — go to the nearest ER (Peter Lougheed in NE Calgary is closest to our clinic). A dental abscess that has spread to the airway is a true medical emergency.

When to Go to ER Instead of a Dentist

When to Go to ER Instead of a Dentist

Go to the hospital — not a dental clinic — if you have:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling that’s closing your eye or extending down the neck
  • High fever (over 39°C / 102°F) with dental pain
  • Uncontrolled bleeding after 30+ minutes of pressure
  • Jaw trauma with potential fracture

Calgary ERs near our NE clinic: Peter Lougheed Centre (Whitehorn), Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre (downtown), Foothills Medical Centre.

Common Questions About Emergency Dental Care in Calgary

How much does an emergency dental visit cost in Calgary?

Emergency exam + X-ray: $150–$250. Treatment cost varies by procedure (e.g., emergency root canal treatment $900–$1,800, extraction $200–$500).

Will insurance cover emergency dental?

Yes — most Alberta dental plans cover emergency exams and treatment under basic services (usually 80–100% coverage). We direct bill so you only pay the difference.

Can I get a same-day appointment without being an existing patient?

Yes. Call us before 2 PM weekdays for same-day availability. New patients are welcome.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

Same protocols apply. For baby teeth knocked out, do NOT reinsert — bring the child in to be assessed. Children’s emergencies are usually handled in our pediatric-friendly operatory.

Is a knocked-out adult tooth always savable?

Not always — but the odds are far better if you act within 30 minutes and store the tooth correctly. Outcomes drop significantly after 2 hours of dry storage.
